Four young lovers get lost in an enchanted forest where a feuding fairy king and queen are using magic on each other — and on anyone unlucky enough to wander through. A mischievous sprite scrambles who loves whom, a troupe of amateur actors rehearses a terrible play, and a man wakes up with the head of a donkey. Balanchine's version of Shakespeare's comedy is one of NYCB's signature works: the first act is pure fairy-tale spectacle with children dancing as butterflies and bugs, the second act is a grand wedding celebration. Mendelssohn's music is as magical as the story. One of the best ballets to see with kids — and one of the best to see without them.
